How to look after your CCTV
CCTV problems are usually found the day footage is needed. These checks help you find them sooner.
What you can check
- Look at each camera in the app every week or so. Check the picture is clear, day and night, and still points where it should.
- Check that recent recordings play back, not just the live view.
- Check the time and date on the recording are right.
- Keep plants, signs and stored goods from blocking camera views.
- If a camera or the recorder shows offline for more than a day, call us.
What we test on a service
- Check each camera's view and re-aim any that have drifted
- Clean domes and lenses, and check housings and cables
- Check night images and infrared
- Check the recorder's hard drive health, how many days are kept, and the time and date
- Check remote viewing still works for the right people
Why it matters
Your system is only useful if it records clear images you can find and export. If you're a business, the CCTV code of practice and data protection rules also expect you to keep it working properly.

How often should CCTV be serviced?
It depends on your site. Many businesses have a yearly service. Tell us how you use it and we'll advise.
Why is the picture blurry at night?
Dirty domes, spider webs or failing infrared are common causes. Call Fortline on 01635 938998.
How long is footage kept?
It depends on the recorder's storage and settings. We can check how many days yours keeps.
Can I clean the cameras myself?
Only if you can reach them safely from the ground. Don't climb ladders to reach them.
