Fire alarm and security servicing in Hungerford
Servicing, repairs and maintenance contracts for fire alarms, emergency lighting and intruder alarms across Hungerford, Lambourn and the villages along the Kennet valley.
Fortline services and repairs fire alarms, emergency lighting and intruder alarms for shops, offices, workshops, managed blocks, farms and homes in Hungerford and the villages around it. We're based near Newbury, and Hungerford is along the A4 within our everyday service area.
We service and repair systems that are already installed, including ones fitted by other companies. We maintain any make. Our engineers have 60+ years combined experience, we've worked for over 600 customers in the last two years, and over 100 customers have their systems on maintenance and monitoring contracts with us.
Servicing and maintenance contracts
A maintenance contract keeps your systems tested on schedule and your paperwork in order, so you're ready when your insurer, fire risk assessor or an inspector asks. We service:
- Fire alarms to BS 5839-1, which recommends a service by a competent person at least every six months. We update the log book and leave a certificate after every visit.
- Emergency lighting to BS 5266-1: the annual full-duration test, with failed lamps, batteries and fittings replaced. Any mains electrical work is carried out by third-party electrical contractors.
- Intruder alarms, including monitored systems, with a certificate after every visit.
Our Protect maintenance plan also includes one callout a year (two if you have three or more systems with us).
Taking over from another installer
Has your installer retired, stopped answering, or left you without service records? You don't need to replace a working system to change who looks after it. Start with a free system health check: an engineer tests your systems, checks your log book and certificates, and gives you written findings. If you decide to switch, our office handles the changeover. If you don't have the old paperwork or engineer codes, tell us when you book so we can plan the visit.
Faults, false alarms and callouts
A fire alarm panel showing a fault, an intruder alarm that won't set, a sounder that keeps going off, or emergency lights that failed their test: we find the cause and fix it, and nothing is fitted without your approval. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, and out of hours the same number, 01635 938998, reaches our 24/7 emergency line.
Hungerford's buildings and what they need
- High Street shops, pubs and offices, often in older buildings, need a fire alarm and emergency lighting that are serviced on time and a log book that shows it.
- Business units and workshops on the edge of town usually need fire alarm servicing and emergency lighting tests, plus an intruder alarm for out-of-hours security.
- Blocks of flats need their communal fire alarm and emergency lighting checked on a schedule. Managing agents can see our property managers page.
- Racing yards, farms and rural homes around Lambourn and the villages often rely on monitored intruder alarms, where reliable signalling matters most.
The phone line switch-off
The UK's old analogue phone network is being switched off, with the move to digital lines due to be completed by January 2027. Monitored intruder alarms and fire alarms that send signals over an old phone line may stop working without warning, which is a particular risk for rural properties that depend on monitoring. We'll check how your alarm signals and tell you honestly whether it needs anything. The usual fix is a digital communicator, often with a mobile network backup, tested with the monitoring centre. Your duties as the Responsible Person
For businesses and the shared parts of blocks of flats, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the Responsible Person keep fire safety systems maintained. Our guide explains what that means: What does the Responsible Person have to do? Need a fire risk assessment? Fire risk assessments are arranged via our accredited partner.

Can you service an alarm another company installed?
Yes. We maintain any make of fire or intruder alarm, and we start with a free system health check so you know where your system stands.
How often should a fire alarm be serviced?
BS 5839-1 recommends a service by a competent person at least every six months, plus a weekly test by you or your staff. Your fire risk assessment may ask for more.
Do you test emergency lighting in Hungerford?
Yes. We carry out the annual full-duration test, replace failed lamps, batteries and fittings, and issue a certificate. Any mains electrical work is carried out by third-party electrical contractors.
Will my alarm work after the phone line switch-off?
If it signals over an old analogue phone line, it may not. We check how your alarm signals and recommend a fix, usually a digital communicator with a mobile network backup.
What happens if my alarm goes off out of hours?
Call 01635 938998. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, and outside those hours calls go through to our 24/7 emergency line.
