Will my alarm stop working when the phone lines switch off?

If your alarm sends signals over an old analogue phone line, it might. Here's how to tell, and what to do.

What's changing

The UK's analogue phone network is being replaced by digital, internet-based lines, with the switch-off due to be completed by January 2027. Calls carry on as normal, but equipment that used the old line to send signals can stop working.

Which alarms are at risk

  • Monitored intruder alarms that use a phone line dialler to reach a monitoring centre or keyholders
  • Fire alarms with an auto-dialler
  • Door entry systems that ring a phone line
  • Lift lines and telecare alarms

Alarms that only make a noise on site, or that already signal over the internet or a mobile network, are generally unaffected.

How to tell

Check your monitoring paperwork, or look for a dialler connected to the phone socket. If your line has already been changed to digital, ask your monitoring centre or alarm company to confirm signals are still getting through. Many systems fail quietly.

The usual fix

Most alarms don't need replacing. A digital communicator, often with a mobile network backup, replaces the old dialler and is tested end to end with the monitoring centre.
