Fire and security systems in Theale

Alarms, cameras, door access and gates for the offices and trade units around Junction 12, and for the shops and homes in Theale village.

Theale sits where the A4 Bath Road meets Junction 12 of the M4, about 25 minutes from our base near Newbury. Within a mile you have large office buildings, trade counters with yards, a railway station on Brunel Road and an old High Street. Most sites here run several systems that have to work together, and our own engineers look after all of them. We're fully insured, and we've worked for over 800 customers in the last two years.

Security around Junction 12

Offices on Arlington Business Park and the units off Station Road and Brunel Road stand empty overnight and at weekends, and the motorway is a few minutes away for anyone leaving in a hurry. What we fit and maintain here:

  • Intruder alarms: graded to what your insurer asks for, set and unset from an app, and signalling to a monitoring centre. Police response to a monitored intruder alarm depends on the system being installed and maintained to the required standards by a certified company, registered with Thames Valley Police, and on its false alarm record. We place and set up detectors to keep false calls down.
  • CCTV: a camera that reads number plates at the yard entrance, another that shows faces at reception, recorded on site and viewable on your phone.
  • Access control and door entry: fobs or cards per tenant, so a lost fob is cancelled in software instead of changing locks, and video intercoms so reception or a remote team can let visitors in.
  • Gates and barriers: servicing, repairs and safety inspections to BS EN 12453, including closing force measurements and tests of every safety edge and photocell.

Fire safety beyond the panel

In a modern office the fire alarm is one part of a chain. Escape routes need lighting if the power fails, doors on access control must release when the alarm sounds, and stairwell smoke vents (AOVs) have to open. We test emergency lighting to BS 5266-1 and replace failed lamps, batteries and fittings; new circuits or other mains work are done by an electrical contractor. Because we look after the alarm, the vents and the door access, one visit plan proves the links between them. We also install new and replacement fire alarms.

The village and its older buildings

Theale High Street and Blossom Lane have been a conservation area since 1971, and Holy Trinity church and The Lamb each have a small conservation area of their own. If your shop, pub or house is listed or sits inside one of these areas, a bell box or camera on the front wall may need listed building consent or planning permission, so check with West Berkshire Council before work starts. We plan discreet positions, and we use wireless detectors where running cable would damage old plaster or beams.

Who inspects in Theale

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service enforces the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 here. Its Theale Community Fire Station on Wigmore Lane opened in 2021 and is shared with Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service. A fire safety inspector can ask for your fire risk assessment and maintenance records, so every visit we make ends with paperwork you can hand straight over.

Maintenance contracts for Theale sites

Every system on a site can go on one contract, with one renewal date.

  • Protect: certificates and reports within 24 hours, kept in our customer portal, and one call-out a year included (two on sites with three or more systems).
  • Essential: certificates and reports emailed within 48 hours. Essential is pay as you go, so call-outs are charged when you need one.

The fire log book is kept up to date on both plans. Our fire alarm team includes engineers with a Level 3 fire alarm qualification, and every service follows BS 5839-1. Changing from another contractor? Start with a system health check.

The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. Out of hours, 01635 938998 goes through to our 24/7 emergency line.

Common questions

Can one company look after the alarm, CCTV and door access in our office?

Yes. We put them on one visit plan with one set of records, and we test how they work together, for example doors on access control releasing when the fire alarm sounds.

Our unit's intruder alarm is monitored. Will the police come if it goes off?

Police response to a monitored intruder alarm depends on the system being installed and maintained to the required standards by a certified company, registered with Thames Valley Police, and on its false alarm record. We check detection and signalling on every service to keep false calls down.

Can you fit cameras to a listed building on Theale High Street?

Usually, with care. Cameras on a listed building may need listed building consent or planning permission, so check with West Berkshire Council before work starts. We suggest discreet positions and fixings, and wireless equipment where cable runs would cause damage.

Do you service barriers and gates on business parks?

Yes. We service and repair automated gates and barriers, and inspect them to BS EN 12453 with a written record of closing forces and safety devices.
