Fire alarm servicing and maintenance in Thatcham

Maintenance contracts, fault repairs and takeovers for fire alarms on Thatcham's industrial estates, in its town-centre shops and offices, and in managed blocks. We maintain any make.

Thatcham is about 10 minutes from Newbury along the A4, roughly 4 miles by road, and it's part of our core area. This page covers one job: keeping your fire alarm serviced to BS 5839-1 and your records ready for your insurer or fire risk assessor. For CCTV, intruder alarms, gates and the other systems we look after in the town, see our main Thatcham page.

We maintain any make. Fully insured. Over 800 customers in the last two years.

Where Thatcham's fire alarms are

Most of the town's larger systems sit on the estates along the A4 Bath Road, east of the centre: Colthrop Business Park on Colthrop Lane, Thatcham Park and Transigo off Gables Way, Pipers Industrial Estate, and Rivermead Business Park on Station Road. Warehouses and trade units bring their own servicing problems:

  • High ceilings and racking, so detectors need the right access equipment on the day.
  • Dust, fumes and loading-bay doors, which can set off the wrong type of detector.
  • Shift work, so tests are planned so that sounders don't catch staff unawares.
  • Multi-let buildings, where the landlord may look after one system and each tenant another.

Closer to the centre, shops and offices around The Broadway and the Kingsland Centre, schools, care homes and the town's newer apartment blocks need the same basics: a system that works, tested on time, with a log book that proves it.

What a Thatcham maintenance contract covers

BS 5839-1 recommends a service by a competent person at least every six months, plus a weekly call point test by you or your staff. Our fire alarm team includes engineers with a Level 3 fire alarm qualification, and every service follows BS 5839-1. On each visit we:

  • test a share of detectors and call points, so every device is tested at least once a year
  • check the panel, batteries and standby power
  • test sounders, and links to door releases or a monitoring centre
  • record any faults and quote for them, with nothing fitted without your approval
  • update your fire log book

Your certificate and service report arrive within 24 hours of the visit on Protect, or within 48 hours on Essential.

Changing contractor

You don't need a new system to change who services it. Most of the systems we look after were fitted by someone else. Book a system health check: an engineer tests the system, reviews your log book and certificates, and gives you written findings graded Urgent, Recommended or Monitor. If you decide to switch, our office deals with your old provider. Missing engineer codes or paperwork? Mention it when you book.

Faults and the phone line switch-off

Panel showing a fault, or a sounder that won't stop? Call 01635 938998. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, and out of hours the same number reaches our 24/7 emergency line. Protect includes a 24/7 emergency response: an engineer within 4 hours for urgent faults in our core area (confirmed on your quote). One callout a year is included on Protect (two with three or more systems), usable in or out of hours. On Essential, callouts are pay as you go.

If your fire alarm signals to a monitoring centre over an old analogue line, it may stop when that line is switched off; the move to digital lines is due to be completed by January 2027. We'll check how yours signals and, if needed, fit a digital communicator. Read our switch-off guide.

Plans for Thatcham sites

Both our plans cover your service visits and keep your fire log book up to date. Protect adds 24-hour certificates, the included callout and the 4-hour emergency response. Essential suits sites that want servicing done properly and pay for callouts as they need them.

We also service fire alarms in Cold Ash, Bucklebury, Midgham, Woolhampton and Brimpton. See also Newbury and fire alarm servicing in Theale.

Common questions

We rent a unit on a Thatcham estate. Is the fire alarm our job or the landlord's?

Your lease should say. Often the landlord looks after any system serving shared areas and each tenant looks after the one in its own unit. We can service either, and we'll tell you what we find.

Can you service our warehouse fire alarm without stopping work?

Usually, yes. We plan the visit around your shifts, test one area at a time and tell your team before any sounders go off.

How quickly do we get the certificate?

Within 24 hours of the visit on Protect, and within 48 hours on Essential. Your fire log book is kept up to date on both plans.

Our old installer has stopped turning up. Can you take over?

Yes. We maintain any make of fire alarm. Start with a system health check and we'll tell you where your system stands before you decide anything.

Is Thatcham in your core area?

Yes. Protect includes a 24/7 emergency response: an engineer within 4 hours for urgent faults in our core area (confirmed on your quote). Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, and outside those hours 01635 938998 goes through to our 24/7 emergency line.

Alarm sounding or a gate stuck?

Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm. Out of hours, call the same number for our 24/7 emergency line.
